Summer in the Central Valley hits differently. By May, the temperatures are climbing, and by June the last thing most people want is a heavy, hot meal. What they want — even if they don't know it yet — is sushi.
Fresh, cold, clean, and satisfying without weighing you down. That's what sushi does in the summer better than any other food. And after 20 years in Stockton and Modesto, we've gotten very good at putting together the right plates for warm-weather evenings.
Why sushi is made for summer
- It doesn't heat up your kitchen. No oven, no stove, no standing over steam when it's already 95° outside.
- It's genuinely light. A well-built plate of sashimi or a couple of rolls leaves you full without the sluggish feeling of a heavy dinner.
- The flavors are clean and bright. Cucumber, avocado, citrus ponzu, fresh fish — these are summer tastes whether you think of them that way or not.
- It travels well. Pack up an order and take it to a park, a friend's backyard, or the patio. It holds better than hot food does.
Our summer picks right now
These are the things our regulars keep coming back to once the weather turns warm:
🐟 Sashimi Platter
Cold, clean cuts of salmon, tuna, and yellowtail. Nothing cooked, nothing heavy — just the fish at its best. Perfect for a hot evening.
🥒 Cucumber Rolls
Cool, crisp, and vegetarian. A refreshing option on its own or alongside richer rolls when you want balance on the table.
🌶️ Dante's Inferno Roll
A signature that somehow cools you down — the kick from the spice, the freshness of the fish, and the crunch all at once.
🍋 Albacore Sashimi w/ Ponzu
Thin slices of albacore with a citrus ponzu drizzle. Light, bright, and exactly what a summer evening calls for.
🥑 Avocado Rolls
Simple and satisfying. Creamy avocado in seasoned sushi rice — good on its own, great as part of a spread.
🍣 Nigiri Assortment
Hand-shaped rice topped with whatever's freshest today — salmon, tuna, shrimp, yellowtail. Ask the chef what's best right now.
"Fresh fish in summer heat — there's nothing else like it. Our fish comes in daily. We never serve yesterday's catch."
Pairs well with a summer evening
Coming in with a group? A few things make the experience even better this time of year:
- Start cold, go light. Open with edamame and a cucumber roll before moving to richer signature rolls.
- Sake or Japanese beer. Both were built for clean fish flavors. Lighter than a glass of wine in the heat.
- Miso soup on the side. Even in summer, a small bowl of miso grounds the meal without weighing it down.
- Finish with mochi ice cream. We have it. It's the right move when it's warm outside.
Dine in or take it outside
Both locations have comfortable dining rooms — cool air conditioning, relaxed atmosphere, good for a slow Tuesday evening or a weekend dinner with people you actually want to spend time with.
If you'd rather take it home or out to the yard, our takeout holds well. Just keep the soy sauce and ginger on the side and eat it within the hour for the best experience.

One thing we always say in summer
When it's too hot to cook and too early to sleep, sushi is the right call. Light enough to leave you feeling good, satisfying enough to actually count as dinner.
We've been doing this in the 209 for over twenty years. Come in and let us take care of you this season.
